What Are the Differences Between Fiber Laser Cutting and Welding?

Recommendation:

Recently, we received many customer inquiries about why can't handheld laser welding machines and laser cutting machines replace each other since both two equipment work with fiber laser generators.

Although the two machines have the same principle (both using the laser to complete the metal processing work), their purpose is different (one is for welding together, and the other is for cutting).

First, the air pressure used by the two machines is different. Taking nitrogen as an example, the air pressure of the fiber laser cutting machine is generally 1.6 MPa, and the air pressure of the fiber laser welding machine is 0.1 MPa to 0.3 MPa. The gas consumption and purpose of the two pieces of equipment are different. Laser cutting requires high air pressure with appropriate parameters and instantly blows away the molten pool to ensure that the cutting section is smooth. Fiber Laser welding uses slight air pressure to fill the molten pool evenly to form a beautiful weld.

Secondly, the nozzle shapes of the two laser machines are different. Laser cutting nozzles are generally conical. This shape helps to increase the air pressure at the air outlet, making the air flow more focused on the slit. Laser welding nozzles are generally straight, and their primary purpose is to prevent welding spatter from polluting the protective lens.

Thirdly, the auxiliary gas used is different. Laser welding is mainly based on inert gas; nitrogen, argon, and carbon dioxide gas are commonly used. In laser cutting, we mostly use nitrogen, air, and oxygen.

Fourth, the mechanical structure is different. The mechanical construction of the fiber laser cutter machine is mainly fixed. The cutting head is fixed on the gantry and the machine tool to form three fixed axes of X, Y, and Z. This structure can promise high cutting precision. The handheld laser welding machine is more flexible in design, suitable for moving and handling, and not limited by the workpiece size and the working place.

Many customers will try to change the portable fiber laser welding machine into a handheld cutting machine by increasing the air pressure and replacing the nozzle. It is not to say that this method is not feasible, but it should be noted that in the actual production process, this method has excellent potential safety hazards. We do not recommend that customers change the handheld welding machine to cutting tools alone. Doing the right job with the right equipment can be safer and more efficient. The specialist only masters his field.
