Recommendation:

You probably know that carbide wood lathe tool is one of the essential turning tools for cnc wood lathe. And, you probably use this tool for a while. But you may not have used it properly. In this guide, we'll take you through the whole points one by one. Enjoy!

Before we dive into the specifics, let’s have a look at how to assemble the wood lathe carbide tools kit.

It’s time to go through all the Pro tips concerning how to use it with your cnc lathe for wood perfectly.

Pro Tips in Terms of Using Carbide Wood Lathe Tools Properly with Your CNC Lathe Wood Machine

In this part, I’ll talk about the specifics from the following 3 aspects:

The Blade Needs A Perfect Installation Height

First of all, let ’s take a look at the basic principles.

Divide the minimum diameter of the workpiece by 7 and we will get a value of adjustment distance; This value is the exact height of the carbide woodturning tips that we should adjust; If the tool is installed upward, the blade tip should be higher than the center point (workpiece) by this distance. If the tool is installed facing down, the tip should be lower than the center point by this distance.

Now that you knew the basic principle, let’s dive into the details of each step.

Get the diameter value of the thinnest part of the workpiece

As the following diagram shows, here is the thinnest part of the turning job. We’ll need to measure the diameter of this part. For instance, it is 30mm.

a diagram indicates the thinnest part of a woodturning piece

Calculate the perfect adjustment distance

We make a calculation like this: 30mm÷7=4.28mm, so the adjustment distance should be this value: 4.28mm.

Adjust the height of the tool blade

Supposing the blade is installed upward, we make an adjustment that the tip should be 4.28mm higher than the center point of the workpiece, as the picture shows here.

a diagram indicates the blade is 4.28mm higher than center line of workpiece

Similarly, if the carbide wood turning tool is installed downward, then the tip of the tool is 4.28mm lower than the center point. If you follow what we are saying here strictly, you will get two benefits:

1) Your tungsten carbide woodturning tools would be the most durable ones.

2) More importantly, the finish of your woodturning jobs is the best as well. Nice and smooth.

Sharpen the Carbide Wood Turning Tools Properly

When the blade becomes unsharp, we need to sharpen it in time; Please sharpen the inside face of the blade only, do not sharpen the outside. It’s better for you to use EagleTec dedicated blade sharpen tools. For beginners, please watch the sharpening tutorial on our website to avoid tool damage due to incorrect operations.

Other Pro Tip

Need your attention: the woodturning inserts are made of cemented carbide. In the process of woodturning, please make sure that the wood blank does not contain metals, stones, sand, and other substances to avoid damage to the carbide blade.
