Can Laser Cutting Machine Cut Copper Pipes?

Pure copper has good electrical conductivity, diamagnetism, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance. Adding zinc to copper increases the strength of the alloy, as does its plasticity. 10-20% zinc alloys are known as gilded metals and are generally applied in the jewelry industry and the production of heat exchangers; 30% zinc alloy is known as Cartridge Brass. The maximum threshold for zinc in formable brass is about 35%. Adding other alloying elements can further improve the properties of brass. Brass has strong wear resistance and is often used to manufacture valves, water pipes, and connecting pipes for indoor air-conditioning units and radiators.


The traditional cutting method uses a cutting knife after the worker measures the length of the copper piece to be cut, marks, and fixes. The other cutting method is by high-speed rotating saw teeth.


But both production methods have apparent disadvantages. One is to increase labor costs. The 2nd, production efficiency is low, unfavorable for large-scale production. The third is that the cutting precision is low, and the incision has burrs.


Pure copper and brass are highly reflective metal materials with meager absorption rates for standard wavelength lasers. At the same time, the material has good thermal conductivity, and the absorbed heat will soon spread to the surrounding processing area, affecting the processing quality. So traditional Co2 laser machine is not suitable for brass cutting.

The laser is focused into a high-power and high-density laser beam through the optical system. Then the laser beam is irradiated on the workpiece to bring it to the melting point. Meanwhile, the molten or vaporized metal is blown away by the high-pressure gas coaxial with the beam. With the changes in the relative position of the light beam and the metal sheet, the material will eventually form a kerf to achieve the purpose of cutting.
