Minimize Billet Diameter

The ideal diameter for the billet is 1 to 2mm more than the thickest part of the bat (handle). As a result, the overall cutting volume becomes smaller, thereby shortening the cutting process and improving production efficiency.

Increase The Work Speed

What is the perfect work speed for the EagleTec CNC wood lathe? There is no ideal number, and it never was. Different materials have different appropriate work speeds. The appropriate process speed here refers to the maximum rate we can achieve to ensure a nice and clean finish. We believe that users will eventually find this sweet spot through continuous attempts and improvement. 


Reduce The Passes as Much as Possible

The perfect passes should be the minimum number to be achieved while ensuring a good cut finish. Analogically, you’ll get this after many tests and improvements.


Optimize Cutting Path

The handle of a baseball bat gets relatively thin compared to the barrel. The overall depth of the cuts for both sections would have to be drastically different. The path at the barrel where the cut is very shallow is where a lot of time is consumed - that could be cut in one or two, or three passes but is being included in each pass of the blade. Therefore, just putting the same passes for the handle and barrel would be not sufficient. Imagine we have 3 passes for the barrel and 6 for the handle. Will this help? Yes, of course. This is the point of cut path optimization. 

Unlike DXF files, G-code can specify the cutting path the way we want it to be. We can have more control over how the lathe cuts. A custom tool path like this might be more efficient could be used. 

In a word, setting up multiple, different passes to happen back-to-back that would benefit us the most. And that could be accomplished by programming via g-code. The video below demonstrates an EagleTec CNC wood lathe cuts a baseball bat with a custom cutting path (G-code).

The programming process should have two steps. 

• Just like the dxf sample you mentioned, we need to draw all the cutting paths in CAD software first.

• We import the dxf cut path into a CAM program and output the G-code file after setting the dimensions correctly. Next, we throw the code to the lathe to run.
